Creating a new library
To create a new library, either click the "New Library" button in the toolbar, or select "New Library" from the File menu. You will be presented with the following setup sheet:
When creating a library, you need to decide the following:
- The name of the library. You can type this into the name field at the top of the setup sheet. This name will actually be used as the name of a newly created folder which will contain the new iTunes Library file, along with the other files and folders that go along with it, such as the iTunes Library.xml file, the Album Artwork folder, etc.
- The location of the library. By default, PowerTunes creates new libraries in ~/Music/PowerTunes (where ~ represents your home folder). However, you can click the "Custom location..." button to choose a different folder to store the new library in.
- The media folder the library will use. Every iTunes library has a media folder where it stores its music and video files. More than one library can use the same media folder though, so you are given several options in the setup sheet:
- Create new media folder. This will create a new media folder called "iTunes Music" alongside the library file.
- Use same media folder as library. This option allows you to use an existing media folder already used by another library. Both libraries will store their music in that same folder.
- Use shared media folder. If you have shared a media folder from another account using PowerTunes sharing features, you can choose to use the shared media folder for your new library
- Choose another media folder. This lets you select any folder on your computer to store the new library's music. This can be useful if you want to store your music in a new location, such as on an external hard drive.
After you have set up your new library the way you want, click "Create Library". PowerTunes will create the new library and automatically open it up in iTunes so you can start working with it.
