Preferences
To access iPhoto Library Manager's preferences, click on the "iPhoto Library Manager" menu and select "Preferences".
General preferences:
- Quit iPhoto Library Manager after closing the main window: checking this box will keep iPhoto Library Manager running even if you close the main window. This can be useful if you wish to use the dock menu to have quick access to your photo libraries.
- Warn when permissions can't be set: when using iPhoto Library Manager's capabilities to change the permissions of one of your library, if any error occurs that prevents permissions from being changed on one or more files in a library, a window will be displayed showing those files. If you do not want this information displayed, uncheck this checkbox.
- Calculate library sizes automatically: if this box is checked, then the first time you select a library in the main window, its size will automatically be calculated. If not checked, then the size will not be calculated until you click the "Calculate Size" button.
- Bring iPhoto to the front when launching: when checked, iPhoto will be brought to the front when it is launched from within iPhoto Library Manager. Otherwise, the iPhoto window will appear behind the iPhoto Library Manager window when launched.
- If not previously running, quit after opening shortcut: if iPhoto is not running and you open a shortcut file from the Finder, this causes iPhoto Library Manager to launch and open the appropriate library. If this box is checked, iPhoto Library Manager will automatically quit itself after opening the library.
- When extracting photos, also copy originals: when using the extract photos feature, if this box is checked, then any original copies of photos in the library will be copied into a folder titled "Originals" in the destination folder. Otherwise, only the edited versions of the photos will be copied.
- Keep library names in sync with folder names: keeps the name of the library and the name of the folder on disk the same when you change one or the other. So, if you rename a library, iPLM will rename the folder for that library as well, and vice versa.
- Add name of current library to iPhoto window title: in order to more easily tell which of your libraries you're working with when in iPhoto, checking this option will add the current library's name to the title of the main window in iPhoto. The window title will only have the name added if you have launched iPhoto using iPLM's "Launch iPhoto" toolbar button. No title will be added when opening iPhoto directly through the Finder or the Dock.
- Automatically check for updates: Checking this box will make iPhoto Library Manager check on the internet for new versions at regular intervals. You can also check for updates manually using the "Check For Updates" menu item.
- Double clicking a library: here, you can configure what happens when double clicking a library in the library list. If you choose to have double clicking a library open that library, you can option-click on the library to rename it.
Photo copying:
- Preserve photo attributes: these settings apply to both copying albums and merging libraries. When moving photos from one library to another, iPhoto Library Manager will preserve all the metadata information that goes with those photos in iPhoto. If you do not want some or all of this data to be transferred, you can uncheck the appropriate checkbox(es). If you uncheck "Create keywords not already in library", this will cause only keywords that already exist in the destination library to be preserved, otherwise, any keywords that don't exist in the destination library will be created if necessary.
- Don't import duplicates: with this option checked, if you are copying albums, merging libraries, or importing photos, then iPhoto Library Manager will detect if any of the photos being imported are already present in the target library and skip over them if they are. Note: due to a bug in iPhoto 6, some or all duplicates may still be copied even if this option is checked.
- When recreating albums, use existing photo in place of duplicates: if you are copying albums or merging into a library that already has a copy of one of the photos being copied over, enabling this option will add the existing copy of the duplicate photo to any recreated albums. If this option is disabled, then only photos that are being improrted to the destination library for the first time will be added to the newly created albums.
- Use XML info only: checking this option will cause album copy and merge operations to bypass opening the source library to get photo information and instead read the data directly from the library's AlbumData.xml file. Click here to read more about the details of this option.
- Don't copy originals: by default, when you perform any operation that copies a photo from one library to another (such as copying albums or merging libraries), if that photo has beeen modified since it was first imported, then both the original version and the modified version of the photo will be copied over to the new library, so that the "Revert to Original" command can still be used there to discard your changes. However, if you want to save disk space and have no need to keep around the original versions of your photos, you can uncheck this option so iPhoto Library Manager will only copy the modified version of the photo.
- Copy hidden photos: iPhoto 7 added the new ability to hide specific photos so they don't appear in the iPhoto interface. If this option is enabled, then all photos will be copied during album copies and merges, even if they are hidden in iPhoto.
- When copying RAW photos: if you have a RAW photo in one of your libraries that you have edited using iPhoto, it is not currently possible to keep together the RAW version with its edited version when copying between libraries unless you are running iPhoto 7. Here, you can choose whether you want to to copy the RAW version of a photo or the edited JPG version. If you are running iPhoto 7, you can also choose to copy both.
- Recreate albums in target library: with this box checked, when you copy albums from one library to another, the contents of the albums will be duplicated in the destination library. If unchecked, the photos in the albums will be imported to the destination library, but no new albums will be created there.
- Roll creation: you can configure how film rolls/events will be created in the destination library for an album copy. You can either preserve rolls/events as they were in the source library, create a single roll/event for each album being copied, or just create a single roll/event containing all the photos being copied.
- Create an album for each library merged: controls whether the main Library album is recreated along with all the other albums from a library during a merge.
- Recreate contents of smart albums in merged library: it is not possible to recreate smart albums in an iPhoto library, but if this box is checked, then for each smart album in a library being merged, iPhoto Library Manager will create a regular album in the destination library containing the photos that were in that smart album at the time of the merge.
- Combine contents of albums with same name: normally, when merging libraries, a new album is created in the destination library to hold the contents of each album being imported from the source library. If this option is checked, and the destination library already has an album with the same name as one being copied from the source library, then the photos from that album will be added to the existing album rather than creating a new one.
- Relaunch iPhoto every N rolls: when performing a large number of operations in a row with iPhoto, as happens when merging large libraries together, iPhoto can sometimes take up more and more memory and/or become unstable as the process continues. If you are experiencing problems with iPhoto crashing or slowing down during a merge, enabling this option will quit and relaunch iPhoto after importing a certain number of rolls/events of photos in a row. This can help reduce iPhoto's memory footprint and increase its stability while performing a merge.
Importing
- Don't import files smaller than X KB: checking this option will automatically filter out any photos in the dropped folders that are smaller than the given size. This is useful, for example, when you have a folder that includes both full size and thumbnail versions of photos and you only want the full size photos imported, just pick a size that's larger than the size of the thumbnails but smaller than the size of the full size photos.
- Set photo date to: sets the date of each imported photo to either the file's creation date, the file's modification date, the current date, or a custom date specified by you
- Set photo comment: sets the comment of each imported photo to the Finder/Spotlight comment of the image file. You can set this comment yourself in the Finder, but many other programs will set the comment of some files themselves. For instance, some web browsers will set a downloaded file's comment to the URL that the file was downloaded from. Using this option will allow you to keep such information around in iPhoto as well.
- Import Spotlight metadata: if the imported files have been indexed by Spotlight and have metadata available for their rating, keywords, or title, you can use these options to carry that information into iPhoto. These options are only available when running in OS X 10.4 (Tiger) or later.
- For each import: specifies how rolls/events should be organized when importing photos. The "Create one roll/event for each folder with photos" will mimic iPhoto's behavior and create a separate roll/event for each folder with photos that's encountered when traversing the folder hierarchy of photos that were dragged in. You can also have all the photos imported as a single roll/event if so desired.
